Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) has released 2019 statistical data of top 100 domestic and foreign applicants who filed the most patent applications in Taiwan. These top ranked applicants are generally the same applicants entering the top 100 list of previous years. The significant change in 2019 is Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) with 1,333 cases by an annual increase of 41.2%, out race all top foreign applicants led by Alibaba Group with 944 cases (+41.2%), Applied Materials with 663 cases (+51.7%) and Qualcomm Incorporated with 582 cases (-42.4%).
For top domestic applicants, the total invention and utility model applications increased by 8% and 10%, respectively, while the total design applications decreased by 22%. The first-ranked TSMC with 1,333 cases, is followed by Acer with 565 cases and AU Optronics with 586 cases.
For top foreign applicants, the total invention and design applications increased by 2% and 50%, respectively, despite the total utility model applications decreased by 46%.The top ranking foreign companies out of the whole list are provided as follows:
